Commercial Insurance in Connecticut

Entrepreneurs and small business owners thinking about getting their feet wet int the world of commerce often seek advice at Lana Insurance Center Inc about the type of insurance they need. We tell them, as we've told scores of our other Meriden, North Haven, and Wallingford, CT commercial insurance clients, that although there are many types of policies they should have, there are only two that Connecticut requires they must have — workers compensation and commercial auto insurance.

Commercial Auto Insurance

If your Connecticut business makes use of any type of vehicle in the course of the day, whether it is owned or leased; used to transport passengers, make deliveries, or plow driveways, you must have commercial auto insurance in place. It doesn't matter if the car or truck is owned or leased, registered to an individual, LLC, corporation, or partnership;

The purpose is the same as for personal vehicle insurance, to cover bodily injuries and/or property damage. However, there are a couple of things to note.

  • Businesses are up against bigger risks than the average motorist, transporting passengers, making deliveries, plowing driveways, just to name a few. Therefore, the prudent business owner should carry higher liability limits on his commercial vehicles than he does on his personal vehicle.
  • And speaking of personal vehicles, anyone who uses his own car for business purposes would be wise to purchase commercial auto insurance for it, since should it be involved in an accident, many insurers may refuse to pay.

Workers Compensation

Any business with one or more employee, whether full or part-time, must carry workers comp. The only exception is the sole proprietors who work alone. This type of policy protects both employer and employee.

For the employee injured on the job, it pays him for lost wages as well as any medical expenses related to the incident. It also pays for job-related illnesses. In some cases, should the worker be unable to return to his position, it can go toward job retraining.

For the employer, it pays for all the above expenses he might have, in most cases, been held responsible

Other Types of Commercial Insurance Policies:

Although the following are not required by Connecticut law, every business owner should take the time to consider them.

  • Commercial Liability Coverage
  • Commercial Umbrella Insurance
  • Business interruption
  • Cyber Liability
  • Commercial
  • Commercial Property Insurance

If you think your Meriden, North Haven, or Wallingford, CT business might need any of the above, we'd be glad to explain them in detail. Or if you'd like us to review your current policy, please let us help. Lana Insurance Center is always here for you, only a phone call away.
