Auto Insurance in Connecticut

Here in Connecticut, all drivers are required to maintain auto insurance coverage in order to be allowed to drive in the state. The government also outlines minimum requirements for these insurance policies, so you'll need to meet at least the basic levels of coverage. Here's what you need to know.

Connecticut Auto Insurance Requirements

At the very least, your coverage will need to include the following:

  • Bodily Injury Coverage - This component of your policy will apply to any medical expenses for people injured in an accident. The minimum requirements stipulate that you must have at least $20,000 in coverage per person involved in the accident. This includes a $40,000 minimum to cover everyone who was injured per accident.
  • Property Damage Liability - This aspect of coverage goes towards any damage to another person's physical property, like a vehicle, road sign, fence or building, for example. Your minimum coverage in this area is $10,000. It is important to point out, though, that your own vehicle will not be covered. For this, you'll need separate collision coverage, discussed in the next section.
  • Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist - If you are involved in an accident with a driver who does not have insurance or whose policy is not large enough to cover the damages, this aspect of your policy will fill in the gaps. You must have at least $40,000 in coverage in this area.

Other Coverage Options

As mentioned above, your vehicle is typically not covered under property damage liability. Collision coverage is an optional add-on that you can include in your auto insurance policy to cover any damage to your car when an accident is your fault. This way, you can get your vehicle roadworthy once again. Depending on the limits of your policy, you may also be able to replace your vehicle if it is totaled in the accident.

In addition to adding collision coverage to your policy, you may also have other options to enhance your coverage. Of course, you can increase your coverage amounts beyond the minimum levels as well.
